Pat Shingleton: "Valentine-in the Slammer!"

There will be lots of Valentine cards today and how the tradition began. As noted in a previous column, while in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with the jailor's daughter who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, whereby he signed it: "From your Valentine." Weathercasters will note Valentine's Day cities today, including Valentine, Nebraska. Loveland, Colorado, Ohio and Oklahoma may have delayed rose deliveries with sunshine in Belle Rose and St. Rose, Louisiana. One city, outside Harrisburg, PA, was removed in a previous mention by the editor. Valentine's Day, 1895, showcased the all time single snow event for the state in Rayne, LA, where two feet of snow was recorded.
