Pat Shingleton: "The Evergreen Story..."

Jack Steckman managed the Locust Grove Cemetery and accommodated graveside services for the community. During Christmas Season evergreen wreaths adorned the graves of loved ones. Jack saved the left-over evergreen branches for mom who would construct door decorations. As noted in a previous column, the cold weather kept her displays fresh, long after Epiphany. Our grandfather put me and my brother Kevin into a cradle-box, attached to a sled, to retrieve the greenery from Steckman's. "Gramps" pulled us down a snow-covered Brighton Road and a tenth-of-a-mile trip would last hours. Getting the "two boys" out of the house gave mom a break and gave Gramps an opportunity to talk to every neighbor along the way. The rest of the story tomorrow.
