Pat Shingleton: "The Belt and The Gold..."
The area that safeguards orbiting satellites in Middle Earth Orbits is an area called the Van Allen Belt. This is a reduced radiation zone around the earth and the cause of this zone has been discussed by scientists for almost 50 years. For four decades it was believed that the zone was safe due to radio waves from space that cleared the area of harmful radiation. NASA scientists identified the cause, lightning. Researchers believe that the cleansing radio waves are caused by lightning to create the protective zone. The radio waves interact with particles within the radiation belt, zap some of the energy, change the energy direction and prevent the radiation particles to bounce back into space. Without the cleansing aspect of the lightning, a large, damaging radiation belt would occur, preventing satellites to orbit in the Van Allen Belt. In the future, scientists may be able to remove other damaging belts from around the earth. Years ago, water was discovered in China's Badair Jaran desert. The water discovery kept the sand dunes in the desert stationary in spite of fierce desert winds. The sand dunes in this area are 500 meters tall and are surrounded by 72 lakes. Once the researchers drilled down 20 centimeters they hit water and after drilling more than a meter into the dune's flank, water emerged. The underground water coagulates the grains of sand and keeps the dunes upright against the windy, dry conditions. Years ago, in the province of Prachaub Khiri Khan in Thailand, the fierce flooding resulted in a benefit. After the waters receded, the river banks were loaded with gold as residents panned the precious mineral with much success. Residents praised the spirit of Tha Mauk, who they believe owns the area, providing the gold as compensation for what the flooding took.
