Pat Shingleton: "Passing Out, In the Pile"
Sunday's column showcased the autumn tradition of leaf burning. Another kid-related activity included creating enormous piles of leaves. A 10-foot-pile replicated a jumping and diving "mat." Our brother Mike, seized an entrepreneurial idea that included our sister, Maureen. At an early age, she experienced fainting spells during physical activity. This was later diagnosed as iron deficiency anemia, treatable with supplements. Once the pile was constructed, neighborhood kids including: "Buffalo" Ottoviani, "Beak" Moranti,, "Dunk" Kelly and the Sodano brothers, lined-up,payed a quarter and sometimes witnessed "Re-Re's" passing-out routine. This occurred when Mike tossed her into the pile. Brought inside Denis, and I administered first-aid.
