Pat Shingleton: "Cows "Milkin' the Humans"

Cold Fall mornings in Western PA brought out the Zippo hand warmer. It was fueled by lighter fluid and kept my hands warm while tossing the Pittsburgh Post Gazette on my paper route. Before the introduction of automatic "milkers," the dairy farmer would grab his pail and milking stool and proceed to "milk the cow." Cold hands for the cow may have been a wake-up call as the Zippo handwarmer was also used for that chore. Today is World School Milk Day and over 30schools in the Baton Rouge area will advance activities to increase milk consumption. Our dairy of choice was Hazen's, often mixed with Nestle's Quick. The "3 Stooges" line, "Mind if I dunk?" found my brothers and me dipping Mom's cookies into each other's cold milk glasses.
