Topics: Mardi Gras. Basketball, Snow

The parades are lining-up and the beads will be flying. In my teenage years in Western Pennsylvania, we never heard of Mardi Gras and occupied our time in January and February with sports, the movie theatre and bowling; for diversions. Sometimes we didn't see the sun for a month with clouds that tossed out sleet and snow. It was customary to clear the basketball court at Locust Grove School to enjoy some Sunday afternoon hoops. With temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s, you could hardly feel the ball while dribbling through ice laden puddles. Red, cracked hands were treated. Mom would insist that we "Put some of that Rollie Salve on those hands, boys!" She used that stuff for everything from ear aches to broken arms and concussions.
