Pat Shingleton: "Another Quack Up..."
Duck season is here and it begins with the "Luke Guarisco Duck Calling Competition" at Avoca and Pecan Island Duck Club. Judges include Duck Dynasty stars and Brad Ewing. Geese fly a "V" formation to provide 80% greater range than flying solo. Flying out of formation causes resistance drag. Geese return to take advantage of the lifting power from the lead bird. When a lead goose tires, it rotates to the rear and another goose assumes the point position. Geese in the rear honk to encourage those ahead to hold their speed. If a goose is wounded or incurs any malady, two geese leave the formation to provide assistance. Experts verify that the geese that leave the formation, to aid other geese, stay with it until death or on a return flight.
