BATON ROUGE - Friday was distribution day at the News 2 station as this year's Pat's Coats for Kids draws to a close and the time has come for kids to get their warm winter wear ahead of the coldest Louisiana months.

News 2's Ambria Washington visited a local elementary school where the joy of a new coat was evident on the faces of many a student as they tried on their new fashionable, yet functional, acquisitions that came from a larger than expected donor base.

More than 100 kids at the Progress Road Headstart school in Baton Rouge received coats as part of Pat's Coats for Kids this year. The WBRZ tradition has now been going on for the last 26 years and becomes a bigger boon to the community every year it returns.

Family advocates that work with parents in need throughout the Capital City say it's a great feeling to see a child receive a warm "new" coat that fits them properly.

"We see the need and then the parents would come in and ask if we have anything for their children to wear and a lot of parent are working have lost their jobs their in between jobs and once they buy school clothes they cant afford to buy coats and pats coats for kids help them with that need," said Mamie Frazier of Progress Road Headstart.

Whether they call it a jacket or a coat, regardless of color or style, the kids at Headstart were thankful for the early Christmas gift.

Pat's Coats For Kids was able to distribute nearly 8,000 winter-ready coats to more than a hundred different schools during its 2014 incarnation. The program will return next year with the same goal of warming the hearts and bodies of the less fortunate children of the Baton Rouge area as the season when we all focus on thankfulness and charity returns in 2015.
