Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center is only a few steps away from being the new home of LSU's medical education and hospital services.
LSU threw out plans to build a replacement for the Earl K. Long Medical Center in favor of a partnership with OLOL.
The proposal still needs the approval of the LSU Board of Supervisors and the hospital's board. LSU will take it under consideration Friday. The joint budget committee of the Legislature also has to sign off on the partnership.
The deal would include the first Level 1 trauma center in the region being located at OLOL, alongth with a 24/7 emergency care unit located in Nother Baton Rouge.
Earl K. Long hospital would close by 2014. Officials say expansions at OLOL due to the partnership should provide job oportunities for those working at EKL. However, those transfers have not been worked out.
