Parishes with whooping cough cases
GONZALES- Doctors are warning people with cold-like symptoms to take extra precautions around babies right now.
Louisiana has an increasing number of whooping cough cases. Ascension Parish has the most reported cases in the area with 12.
The number of illnesses has set a post-1960s record in Louisiana. The state epidemiologist, Dr. Raoult Ratard, said 169 confirmed and likely cases as of mid-October breaks a vaccination-era record of about 160 for 2012.
Ratard urges adults to get booster shots if they're going to be around a baby so they don't unknowingly spread the disease to those most likely to die from it.
The disease starts like a cold, with sneezing and a congested or runny nose.
Here's a list of cases in other area parishes:
East Baton Rouge: 11
East Feliciana: 1
Pte Coupee: 1
