GREENSBURG - Saint Helena Parish has been without liability insurance for their buildings for at least a decade. The reason: no money to cover the expense.

A yearly audit showed there is no liability insurance coverage of parish property, meaning if someone is injured in a parish building, or a parish machine hurts someone or causes damage, the parish would not have insurance to cover the expense.

Several people have sued the parish for thousands, but the money to pay them is not there. Parish officials told News 2 they're looking at ways to get covered.

"It's very costly. We have asked for quotes every year and every year it's not financially feasible for us to purchase that type of insurance," said Major Coleman, St. Helena Police Jury president.

The parish is not breaking any rules or violations because it's not mandatory for the parish to have liability insurance.
