CENTRAL - The Central Fire Department is changing the way they respond to structure fires. Central residents will be seeing fire units from District Six and East Side Fire Departments beginning next week.

"With today's economy, constraints, lack of volunteers, we're getting to a point now, where the departments are having problems with sufficient manpower to handle the incident," said Central Fire Department Deputy Chief Charles Mondrick.

To help provide a full staff, Mondrick developed a plan to send the four closest fire stations to the incident, regardless of jurisdictional boundaries.

The Central Fire Station has been in the same location since 1972. With the city's growth, there are now areas in the Central Fire District where a District Six fire station or East Side fire station may be closer to a fire, and vice versa.

"What that is doing is giving us more equipment, more manpower," said Mondrick. "It's giving it to us in a timely fashion."
