Parish council approves tax, toll road
GONZALES - The Ascension Parish Council approved a new tax to fund a parish juvenile detention center. In addition, a new study concerning a potential toll road is coming to Ascension.
The new tax will add about 10-20 dollars per year to property taxes in the parish. Ascension is currently partnering with Assumption Parish to incarcerate juveniles.
Parish officials have already looked into possible locations for the detention center.
The council also approved a study for a toll road that would connect Ascension and Livingston Parishes.
The tollway would start at the intersection of Highways 933 and 42, cross over the Amite River and link with Highway 16.
Both parishes are teaming up with a private business to build the road. If construction for the road is authorized, the company will construct and operate the tolls.
