Parents want refunds after flag football league fumbles
WALKER - Parents are screaming; they want the money they paid to a flag football league organizer returned since the season has been postponed two months.
The Baton Rouge Athletic Initiative Network was set to kickoff in March in Livingston Parish. But, kids did not start playing until June 6th at the New Orleans Saints training facility in Metairie.
The league's organizer, Bo Debetaz, said despite the delay, the out-of-town games were "a chance of a lifetime" for the kids.
But, parents started backing out of the league before kickoff and asked for a refund as games kept getting pushed back.
"If I didn't get what I paid for, then I should be refunded all of my money," parent Jaime Sanchez said. "That's just the way business should run."
Sanchez had three kids set to play in the league and paid more than $200.
"You just don't take off with the money and run," league coach Dale Broussard said. "That's where we draw the line and that's what has been going on this season."
Broussard's team had to disband because too many kids dropped out due to the postponements. He estimates between 100 and 150 kids signed up for the league.
"It seems like a big pile of lies to me," parent Brian Vecellio said. He paid $150 for his kid to pay and has requested his money be returned but has not received it.
When contacted by WBRZ Wednesday, Debetaz would not say if he plans to give the parents their money back. He said those parents quit the league. Later, he was seen at a park throwing the football with a group of kids.
Debetaz spoke with the Walker Parks and Recreations department six weeks ago about using its facilities but nothing has moved forward. The mayor told WBRZ News 2 nothing will move forward until the issue with parents is resolved.
