BATON ROUGE - The parents of 50 kids are trying to find a childcare provider after a fire destroyed their daycare center.

The Istrouma Early Head Start is a daycare for children ages one to three. Many of the children's parents are teenagers or young adults who work or take college courses.

Only a handful of the students were dispersed to the two other Early Head Start locations in the parish.

Parent and student Chantel Johnson said many of her friends who take their kids to the daycare center stayed home from work to look after their children.

"A lot of us that's in school, that's working, that do not have no kind of place for our kids to go but us staying at home, missing school and work," said Johnson.

Head Start is looking for a temporary location to take care of the kids until their facility is repaired.

Donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the YWCA at 8281 Goodwood Blvd.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
