Parents, leaders consider another breakaway school district
ST. GABRIEL- There is talk of a split from the Iberville Parish School District among people who live on the east bank of the Mississippi River.
Also joining the discussion, city leaders. They are looking at the possibility of forming their own municipal system.
St. Gabriel Mayor Lionel Johnson sited "years of frustration" as the fuel for the talks.
East Iberville Elementary and High School and the Math, Science and Arts Academy-East campus are the only two schools located on Iberville's less-populated east bank.
A split would need legislative approval. Similar talks are also happening in parts of south Baton Rouge.
