Pair of EBR bridges shut down
ZACHARY - A pair of bridges in East Baton Rouge Parish are shut down, because they're not safe for travel.
Just outside of Zachary, the bridge on Jackson Road near Tucker Road was closed May 27. The Department of Public Works says the 44-year-old bridge is in good shape overall, but erosion has caused damage to the foundation.
There is now a large hole under the roadway that needs to be filled. For the next month residents will have to use a detour.
"Well we don't particularly like it, but if it has to be done it has to be done," said Jerome Duhon. "They should have checked it sooner. If they would have checked it sooner to check the timbers underneath it might not have happened."
DPW plans to fill the hole with a concrete mixture and then build a new timber back-wall under the bridge. Crews will also make cosmetic repairs and paint guard rails. The parish also shut down the bridge on Lemon B Road in Slaughter near Highway 412 for a similar issue.
