BATON ROUGE- After months of failing to pay for sewer service at Brandywine Apartments, Dr. Stephen Ayers forked over $10,000 as part of an agreement that will keep the water on at the complex for one more month.

That month is to allow tenants and owners in the complex to find another place to live.

"There isn't enough money to continue operating at Brandywine, we've made arrangements to give them time to move and that pretty much is the end of Brandywine," said Ayers, the complex owner.

The city said Ayers still owes more than $125,000 in back payments for sewer service, but will allow the water service to stay on for one more month in good faith.

"There are children out there, they don't have a place to go, if they shut it down today, yesterday, they didn't even have water to take a bath, if they go to school, they can't go to school clean, so they've been kind enough to extend it for those days, and hopefully between now and the end of the month they'll find a place to stay," said Lazerus McDaniel, who owns two units at the complex.

The water is currently back on at the complex.
