CLINTON-- It took crews nearly 11 hours to clean up the roadway after an oil tanker carrying more than 7,300 gallons of crude oil ran off the road and flipped over into a ditch.

Motorists were left to maneuver the long way around the spill from 3 a.m. until 2 p.m. It was a headache for two different groups of cross-country cyclists like Jim Sowers, who was already chilly from his early-morning, chilly bicycle ride.

"I'd like to get through the short route, but it doesn't look like it," Sowers told News 2.

No oil spilled from the tanker, which Louisiana State Police tell News 2 is owned by Ergon, Inc. Crews drilled a hole in the wrecked tanker to offload all the oil from the wrecked tanker to another truck. Then it took workers hours to figure out how to flip the behemoth back onto its wheels and tow it away.

The driver of the truck told deputies he swerved to miss a deer before the truck flipped.

He was ticketed for reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

The roadway was re-opened around 2:00.
