Advocate Outdoorsman Joe Macaluso is reporting on the upcoming duck season, giving us reasons why this may be a little slower start to the season than hunters would like.
"It's a little to early to talk about the future of the duck season, but the season opens this weekend in the west zone, in the east take the kids out, it's the youth weekend.
One of the problems you're going to face is a lot of water in the north, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas, it's prohibiting the farmers from getting in there to cut their fields. All that rain has put a lot of water on the ground.
So if you don't see any ducks, you're going to have to wait a little bit longer wait a few weeks, wait for that cold weather to get in there, freeze over. They've had a little snow, but not enough to take down the temps. The ducks are hanging north of us right now.
You will see some teal, some pintails, some grey ducks, and that's what you're going to be able to take on that opening weekend. A few spoonbills down there too. Just remember you can only take one pintail and only take one model duck this season.
If you want to hit the fishing side of it, head out to the lake it's on fire right now. The bridges are red hot, the drum are starting to play out, but the big bull reds are starting to move in. Fresh shrimp and some plastics are still good, you can even find some big blue catfish." - Joe Macaluso
