BIG LAKE - In this week's Outdoors Report, News 2's John Jackson isn't just hitting the water. He's going in it.

Fishing in the wintertime can be tedious and cold, but if you're up to the task and love getting out on those days when keep most inside, then strap on those duck waders and head to Big Lake. It has plenty of shallow banks that fall off into deeper waters and oyster reefs. The reefs warm-up on sunny days and hold heat in the winter time.

They also hold bait. Trout will sit directly on the oysters and lethargically feed when handed an easy meal. Waders are the best way to sneak-up on the trout. Even trolling motors tend to spook them in Big Lake. You should remove sound by simply walking through the water.

"You know your boat is making that much more noise, that spooks the fish," Big Lake Service Guide Jeff Poe explains. "Plus your boat is drifting so fast it makes it difficult to work with the bait."

Another key to fishing Big Lake: Suspension baits work really well.
