Ousted mayor calls special budget meeting
PORT ALLEN - Ousted Mayor Deedy Slaughter called a special meeting for Wednesday to introduce her budget, five days before Slaughter is forced to vacate office.
On Saturday, voters overwhelmingly voiced their disappointment with her performance and recalled her. Slaughter must vacate office by 4:30 p.m. Monday, but that's not stopping her from trying to get her budget through before she leaves.
"I have no comments," Slaughter said Tuesday, the first time News 2 was able to catch up with her since the recall election.
The News 2 Investigative Unit broke the questionable things that were going on with Slaughter back in February. We uncovered she took a taxpayer-funded trip to the president's inauguration, but conducted no city business during the trip. She raised her salary without council approval, and fired Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain when News 2 received public records requests detailing those actions.
Tuesday, News 2 asked Slaughter if she planned to contest the election, or planned to run again in April. All of those questions were answered with silence.
Meanwhile, the West Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court and other election officials from around the state spent the day unsealing voting machines. The votes from the machines were tallied and certified today, which means Saturday's vote to recall the Mayor is now official.
"We'll now send a certified statement to the Secretary of State," West Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court Mark Graffeo said.
Because Slaughter was recalled by voters, at least three council members said they will not pass anything she introduces at her special meeting Wednesday.
