Other options on the table for sinkhole buyouts
BAYOU CORNE - The growing sinkhole in Assumption Parish swallowed several 30-foot trees within a matter of seconds this week, but some residents living nearby still say they aren't budging from their homes.
A few homeowners decided to stay in the area despite buyout offers from Texas Brine, the company believed responsible. They're now in negotiations to settle the buyouts, but keep their property.
If residents decide to settle and stay, Texas Brine wouldn't be accountable for anything that happens down the road with the sinkhole. It's a risk some say they're willing to take.
"We don't really feel safe. We're very concerned. We're very apprehensive about what could happen, but we're willing to tolerate the risk of staying at this point because we don't want to give up what we have," said resident Dennis Landry.
According to Texas Brine, 19 people have closed on their homes. 64 are still working on a final deal with the company.
