Ordinance hearing set on addressing junkyards
There will be a public hearing on April 12 to get public comment on a proposed ordinance to begin regulating junkyards in Evangeline Parish.
Residents who live near the sites have complained to the police jury.
The jury instructed its attorney to include a nuisance provision that would address residences with three or more abandoned vehicles on the property.
The proposed ordinance would be sent to all junkyard owners in the parish prior to the public hearing.
Property owners will have 90 days to comply with the tougher regulations.
They will also have to build a 10-foot high fence around their property.
Those property owners found to be in violation of the ordinance face a fine up to $500 a day.
