HOUMA - An early-morning crash killed one person and critcally injured another in southern Louisiana, according to State Police.

Troopers in Houma said the one-vehicle crash happened around 2 a.m. today on LA 316 in the town of Gray. The vehicle, an SUV, went off the side of the road, and when the driver tried to regain control it went into a ditch and overturned.

Three people were inside when the vehicle wrecked, and investigators said two passengers that weren't wearing seatbelts were thrown out when the vehicle turned over. Troopers said one of the passengers, 29-year-old Vincente Cardenas of Gray, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second passenger was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Corey Thibodaux of Gray, was wearing a seatbelt and had minor injuries.

Investigators say alcohol may have played a part in the crash, and blood samples from Thibodaux were sent to the State Crime Lab.
