PLAQUEMINE - A 67-year-old woman is dead after police say her grandson accidentally shot her and the family dog at their home Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 58000 block of Bubba Street.

According to Police Chief Kenneth Payne, 19-year-old Blaise Horton was holding a gun when the magazine fell out. Thinking the gun was empty, police said he then pulled the trigger, shooting their dog. The bullet traveled through the pet and struck his 67-year-old grandmother, Kathleen Fulton.

Fulton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Horton has been arrested and will be charged with negligent homicide.

Officers added that the dog survived the shooting and is undergoing surgery.
