EBRSO: Woman coming down after climbing onto La. 190 bridge
BATON ROUGE - Authorities said a woman climbed out onto the Highway 190 bridge from East Baton Rouge to West Baton Rouge Parish this afternoon, forcing them to shut the bridge down.
EBR Sheriff's Office spokesperson Casey Rayborn Hicks said they were called to the bridge around 4 p.m. Deputies said they believed it was part of a suicide attempt.
The sheriff's office tweeted just after 7 p.m. the woman was coming down from the bridge, after firefighters climbed out and secured a harness to her.
Boats were deployed into the Mississippi River in case either the woman or the rescuers wound up falling from the bridge.
Drivers were asked to use I-10 over the new Mississippi River Bridge as an alternate route while the bridge was closed. The eastbound lanes of the bridge were reopened around 7:15 p.m., but the westbound lanes remained closed as rescue operations continued.
