'Old Bridge' lane closures coming this weekend
PORT ALLEN - The US 190 bridge will close this week for repairs. The westbound lanes will close Saturday at 7 p.m. and last through Sunday at 6 a.m. The eastbound lanes will be shut down Monday, during the same times.
The work is part of an ongoing project to make the bridge safer and more durable. The Department of Transportation explains the hours were chosen carefully for people's convenience.
"They are painting and making structural repairs and this is part of the planning process to keep the bridge in service and extend the life," said DOTD Communication Director, Rodney Mallett. "We believe the impact will be minimal."
Some area businesses disagree and say it will make their commute a pain and cost them, as Saturday night is when they see the most business. But, truck stop owner, Louis Vielee thinks a one night pay cut is well worth the security the project will bring.
"I'm sure were going to lose some business," Vielee said. "We hate to see the bridge close, but on the other hand we know it's a necessary repair."
DOTD will have signs outlining detours during the closures. They say there may be additional closures in the future, with work expected to wrap up toward the end of 2016.
