TULSA, Okla. - A teenager has been convicted of plotting to kill students and teachers in a mass shooting at a northeastern Oklahoma high school.

The Washington County jury on Tuesday found 19-year-old Sammie Chavez guilty of planning to cause bodily harm and recommended a 30-month prison term. The jury found Chavez not guilty of conspiring to perform an act of violence.

Chavez, who pleaded not guilty, testified in his own defense Tuesday that he was joking when he described to classmates how a gun and bomb attack could be committed at Bartlesville High School.

He was arrested in December, hours before a gunman opened fire at a Connecticut elementary school and killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself.
