The chairperson of a Senate panel says the failures that led to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico must be scrutinized so that new safety measures can be put in place. Jeff Bingaman, D-NM, opened the hearing today in Washington.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-AK, said the accident should not interfere with offshore oil development.
Executives of the companies involved, including BP, are scheduled to testify.
