BATON ROUGE - East Baton Rouge Parish officials said Blight Court numbers are in for 2014 and the effort to eliminate eyesores was a success.

The system set up by the parish went into effect last September as the court ramped up an an effort to clean the city by cracking down on junk and debris in resident's yards.

The court has addressed nearly 300 violations issued during 2014. Next week will be the first Blight Court session of the new year, and more than a couple of dozen have already made the list.

Some people said they're glad the parish is doing something to keep things clean.

"I think it's awesome. I really think we need it and I really think it would do a lot to motivate people to maintain their yards," said Sue Caillouet.

Parish officials said they hope to double the amount of cases brought before Blight Court this year, increasing the workload from about 30 cases every two weeks to 60 every two weeks.
