VICKSBURG, Miss. - The Army Corps of Engineers and local officials are warning Vicksburg residents that they should not think that Thursday's expected crest of the Mississippi River means the end of the flood.
At a news conference on a bluff overlooking the river, officials said that floodwaters could remain at record levels and a week and the river could remain at flood stage until the end of June.
The Mississippi River was expected to crest Thursday in Vicksburg at 57.1 feet. The flood stage is 43 feet.
The Corps said the levee system was holding although some work may be needed when floodwaters recede to repair any damage. The Corps said there was no danger of the levee being breeched.
