The Ouachita Parish Police Jury will begin drawing down the water level of Cheniere Lake next week.
The 3-foot drawdown will begin Wednesday and will continue through mid-January.
The purpose of the annual drawdown is to allow leaves to decompose, exposing the sandy bottom for spawning.
Tupelo gum leaves have formed into mats over the years, depriving fish of ideal places to spawn.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the drawdowns have been successful in reducing the leaves and other detritus on the lake's bottom.
