BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge police have identified the two officers involved in a deadly shooting over the weekend.

Officers Joshua Gillich, 28, and Michael Davila, 43, remain on paid administrative leave as police continue their investigation.

Gillich has been with BRPD for 4 years. Davila, a recent graduate of the 79th Basic Training Academy, has been with the department since February.

The two officers were involved in a shooting just after midnight Saturday at S. Eugene and Louisiana that killed 32-year-old Tyris Wilkerson.

Police say one of the officers shot Wilkerson as he drove his vehicle toward them at a high rate of speed.

Authorities say the officers first tried to pull Wilkerson over in the 1400 block of Dalrymple for a traffic violation. A chase through several neighborhoods ensued after he refused to stop.

A psychologist who has work with police in similar situations said those officers train their whole lives for that situation, but hope their whole lives they won't have to pull the trigger.

"They've done something that's abhorrent to them, they've taken a life, or they've injured someone severely, and they really don't want to do it again, so they have to be debriefed so the next time it happens they can respond in an appropriate way," said Marc Zimmermann, a psychologist who's counseled officers after shootings.

Court records show Wilkerson was convicted of murder when he was teenager. He was recently released from prison and rearrested in May for crack cocaine possession.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
