Off-duty officer arrested after bar fight
NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans police officer has been arrested for illegally having a firearm in a French Quarter bar.
Police arrested 34-year-old August Michel about 2 a.m. Wednesday at a bar after he allegedly got into a fight with customers inside the business. The bar's security broke up the fight, disarmed Michel - who was intoxicated - and contacted nearby state troopers who notified city police.
Michel is accused of violating a state law that prohibits officers from carrying their weapons into an alcoholic outlet unless they are in an official capacity. Michel, a 14-year veteran of the department, was suspended without pay following his arrest.
The department's Public Integrity Bureau is investigating.
Superintendent Ronal Serpas says once the investigation is complete, he'll review the case and take "appropriate" action.
