PRAIRIEVILLE - The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a pair of tornados touchdowned near the capital city area during Tuesday's bout of severe weather.

NWS survey teams reported that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Prairieville and a stronger, EF-2 tornado hit Livingston area.

The Livingston tornado brough winds up to 120 mph, destroying houses and knocking down powerlines in the area Tuesday afternoon. Over a thousand people were without power as the storm passed over.

The Prairieville tornado tore off the wall of the Gold's Gym on Airline Highway and brought near 80 mph winds with it. The tornado also heavily damaged a Popeye's restaurant.

EF-0 tornadoes are known to peel off some roofs, cause damage to gutters and siding, break branches off trees and push  over shallow-rooted trees. EF-2 tornadoes, however, bring considerable damage including roofs torn off well constructed homes, destroying mobile homes and can even lift cars off the ground.
