Nucor delays iron plant opening after collapse
CONVENT - Nucor announced today that they will have to delay the start of operations to their new iron plant in St. James Parish until the end of this year, after a storage dome collapsed at the site yesterday.
The company said the $750 million direct reduced iron plant was supposed to start production within a few weeks. When it's at full capacity the company said it will be the largest iron producer of that type in the world.
One of the plant's three storage domes collapsed Thursday afternoon, and was originally reported as a possible explosion. No one was hurt in the collapse, which investigators said was due to a structural failure.
Nucor said other work to get the plant ready for production would continue while they investigate the collapse and assess the damage.
