BATON ROUGE - The Baton Rouge Zoo hopes to replace two giraffes that died over the weekend eventually but says there's not currently a timetable to make that happen.

"I miss the one with the light beige tan," Margaret Selver says.

Zookeepers had to put two female giraffes down this weekend: One from a longterm injury; the second after she was attacked by the zoo's male giraffe.

"As soon as we opened the door, he went over there and slammed into her and knocked her down," a zoo curator told News 2.

This is the second tragedy at the zoo in a week. Last week, a baby golden lion tamarin monkey died.

The zoo has had trouble with its animals in the past. In 2013, a bald eagle broke loose from its exhibit and never returned. The zoo calls that incident, as well as the one this weekend 'freak accidents'.

The male and female giraffe had been together in the same stall, in the same barn earlier Friday. Zookeepers were attempting to put them back in as rainy weather rolled in Friday night when the male giraffe attacked.

"It's tough to lose one, but when you lose two it certainly doubles it," the curator says. "They're certainly a charismatic animal for our zoo; One of our bigger, iconic ones."

Now zoo officials will turn their attention to replacing the animals. That is a task that could prove both untimely and costly.

"We work to coordinate within the zoo, so we'll try and get the best match for our male," the curator says.

Once a new giraffe is found, the job of getting the animal to Baton Rouge is quite difficult. A special trailer has to be used, and the shipping and handling price can cost upwards of $7,000.
