Hurricanes and Tropical Storms have been archived since the late 1800s. There were 25 hurricane seasons that did not have a hurricane develop until September 1st. Wednesday afternoon Tropical Depression Number 7 was designated by the Hurricane Center which will become Gabrielle today. Gabrielle could reach hurricane strength as it nears Bermuda over the next seven days. September 9th is the latest date that a hurricane formed within the season from June 1st through November 30th. Gabrielle may make the record books in that category. 2004 was a "low-hurricane" season until "Jeanne" nailed Palm Beach Florida. From its birth on September 7th through the 17th , Hurricane Ivan caused extensive damage from Mobile, Gulf Shores, Biloxi and Pensacola.
