BATON ROUGE - A judge said there will be no bond for murder charges filed against the man accused of killing a Baton Rouge couple he worked for.

Ernesto Alonso, 42, was given no bond for murder charges and a $30,000 bond for kidnapping charges during his first court hearing in Baton Rouge Monday morning.

Alonso faces kidnapping and murder charges for the Oct. 17 deaths of 71-year-old Denis and 70-year-old Suzanne Duplantier. Investigators said Alonso worked for them as a handyman and lived on their property before beating the couple and forcing them to open their safe, which police said was filled with money. Investigators said Alonso then drove the couple to Hammond before strangling them and leaving the bodies in the Duplantiers' abandoned vehicle.

A second suspect in the murders, 48-year-old Frank Garcia, remains in Florida awaiting extradition on similar charges.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said Alonso could face the death penalty if convicted.
