BATON ROUGE - Louisiana grew to no. 1 recently, but not in a healthy way.

A study by The Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ranked Louisiana as the most obese state in the country, edging out Mississippi with an adult obesity rate of 34.7 percent.

Louisiana is also among the top five states in terms of adult diabetes rates and adult non-activity rates.

"It definitely concerns me, because there doesn't seem to be that much of an effort to actually start to steer us in a different direction," said Emanuel Andrews, III, a local personal trainer at the YMCA.

But he isn't surprised, given the way people around the state spend their free time.

"As a culture, we tend to eat every time we are together. We're prepping our foods for taste, and not necessarily with health in mind," said Andrews.

He suggests the next time you're at your favorite tailgate, sampling some fresh veggies instead of the usual fanfare of barbecue and fried foods.  Eating smaller portions could also help.

Money was also a factor.  Nearly one-third of American adults who make less than $25,000 a year are obese.

There are ways to combat that, like the YMCA's Community Shape Up, a free health and wellness program open to non-members.

The full findings of the survey can be found here.
