PIERRE PART- The new Assumption Parish Sheriff was sworn in at a ceremony in Pierre Part Wednesday night.

Leland Falcon took the oath of office. He defeated incumbent Mike Waguespack in an election last fall, and takes over for interim Sheriff Bruce Prejean, who stepped down more than a month early. Falcon says residents can expect big changes.

"I think you're going to see an immediate increase in our narcotics personnel," he told News 2. "We've already reduced the sheriff's salary. When I came in we made sure that we put the salary where I was going to leave it, so the sheriff's salary is already reduced. We're already starting to identify training programs."

Waguespack serves as sheriff for 16 years. His term didn't officially end until June 30th, but he resigned early to take a job in construction management.
