New school year awaits kids who survived twister
MOORE, Okla. - Students in Moore, Okla., are starting a new school year and officials there hope to help pupils put the memory of the deadly May 20 tornado behind them.
Students from the destroyed Plaza Towers and Brairwood elementary schools start classes Friday in a temporary building.
Seven students at the Plaza Towers were among the 24 people killed by an EF-5 twister that hit Moore almost three months ago.
The site where the Plaza Towers school once stood has become a makeshift memorial for the dead and a meeting spot for volunteers, even though there is just a slab where the school used to be.
The district will build new schools at the sites of the old ones; the new ones will have tornado-safe rooms.
