New Orleans officer dies in traffic accident
MARRERO - New Orleans police have identified an off-duty officer who died in a Jefferson Parish traffic accident.
Police spokesman Tyler Gamble identified the officer as 45-year-old Tony Mitchell, a 19-year veteran of the department. Gamble says Chief Michael Harrison notified Mitchell's family.
Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich (sih-TAN'-u-vich) said Mitchell's vehicle stalled on the elevated portion of the West Band Expressway Friday morning and he got out of the car. He says two other vehicles then struck Mitchell's car and he was knocked over the railing to the street below.
