New Orleans man claims 6-month-old Powerball prize
BATON ROUGE - A $40,000 Powerball prize has been claimed, less than two weeks before its March 20 redemption deadline.
The Louisiana Lottery Corporation says a 41-year-old New Orleans man Monday redeemed the ticket for the Sept. 21 drawing. His name was not released.
Lottery officials say the winner's friend told him about a large prize set to expire, so he checked his old tickets and found the winner.
The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K on Howard Avenue in New Orleans. It matched four white-ball numbers and the red Powerball number to win $10,000. The player added the $1 Power Play option, which increased the prize to $40,000.
Lottery winners have 180 days to claim their prize. Unclaimed prizes are put into a fund to be used on later payouts.
