NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans-area residents are slogging through floodwaters after a day of heavy rainfall.

WWL-TV reports flash flood warnings were in effect Saturday evening in Jefferson and Orleans parishes. Flooding was expected in New Orleans and its suburbs.

Nearly 8 inches (20 centimeters) of rain fell in Mid-City during the afternoon and about 5 inches (13 centimeters) fell elsewhere in the city. Water was knee-deep in many parts of New Orleans at mid-evening.
