BATON ROUGE - If you still have not decided where to send your child to school when class resumes this fall, there are some new magnet programs in Baton Rouge schools that could help you make up your mind.
Polk Elementary School is offering a Mandarin Chinese Program for the first time. Cayla Borruano with the foreign language academic immersion magnet program says the program was started because the French and Spanish programs were so successful. Even though many parents many not think Chinese is important to their child's development, Borruano says it could help them later in life.
"There is a lot of economic drive to impart Mandarin Chinese to our students these days," she explained. "Our goal is to prepare them for the economy that they're walking out of school into. We want to make sure they are more marketable and more viable in our global economy."
They are looking for children coming into kindergarten.
That program is not the only new one in the Baton Rouge area. The new Brookstown Middle Magnet Academy will offer health sciences, broadcast communications and honors academy magnet programs. Deborah Roberts is excited about the broadcast communications program.
"The kids will work with state of the art equipment to write and produce their own music, videos, radio programs, journalism and online newspapers," Roberts explained.
There are still twenty or thirty spots remaining in the broadcasting program.
