DENHAM SPRINGS - Used car lots in Denham Springs will have to get a whole new look in 2014. A new law forces them to make changes to help the image of the city.

"It's going to hurt a lot of people," said Nick Schilling, manager of Certified Wholesale Cars.

Schilling's worried that the new city law will jeopardize his business.

"Sounds like people that made the law never owned a car lot, sold cars to the community to give great deals," Schilling said.

The new law will require used car lots to occupy at least three-quarters of an acre. That's a tough task for Certified Wholesale Cars, which is land-locked in downtown Denham Springs. They also must have pavement or concrete for the cars on their lot.

"These existing used car lots (are the) one that we're trying to improve on," said Mayor Jimmy Durbin. "We're not trying to run them out, because they serve a purpose. We want a nice appearance."

City leaders agree with the goal, but not all agree with the way in which to get there.

"Let's don't over-react and put hardship on local business and drive them outside the city," said City Councilman John Wascom. "(That's) one thing we don't want."

The new law affects all used car lots in Denham Springs. Existing lots have until July to get into compliance.
