BATON ROUGE - Governor Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law on Thursday that stiffens the punishment for sex offenders and child predators who fail to register with the state.

Jindal said the bill makes failing to register a criminal offense and requires jail time for convicted offenders who provide false information in an effort to make these individuals think twice about attempting to skirt the law.

The first conviction for a registered sex offender who fails to provide community notification or knowingly provides false information will be fined up to $1,000 and imprisoned for two to ten years without parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
