BAYOU L'OURSE - A man and his son, killed last week, were stabbed more than a dozen times, possibly by swords or knives that one of the victims collected, the Assumption Parish sheriff released Monday.

Mark Massoletti, 52, and Michael Massoletti, 23, were attacked inside their home by a neighbor who took his own life.

Mark was stabbed 17 times and his son, Michael, 18 times Sheriff Mike Waguespack said. He said specifics about the case are still being investigated, and more will be clear after a forensic investigation is complete.

The sheriff said Mark Massoletti collected weapons and had them displayed throughout his home.

Deputies said William Powers Jr. was the killer. He was recently released from jail on misdemeanor battery charges and lived across the street. Reportedly, he had words with Mark Massoletti, who previously told him to stay off his property.

"The only thing we know is that the week before, he was warned," Waguespack said. "[The] resident warned the suspect to not cross the line as far as property is concerned, or they would have problems."
